Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is a therapy that involves low levels of electrical impulse delivered to injured & painful tissues. EMS can be prescribed specifically for pain relief & reduction of inflammation, for reduction of muscle spasm or to cause muscles to contract in order to reduce muscle atrophy.

Electrical impulses are transmitted to specific areas of the body by electrodes placed on the skin. EMS stimulates the body to release its natural pain relievers called endorphins.

EMS also stimulates circulation by contracting and relaxing muscles which assist the body in eliminating waste from injured and painful tissues, similar to massage therapy.

EMS is typically used in conjunction with moist heat in more chronic conditions or the application of ice in acute conditions.
